Green Pastures &
Limestone Land

Heathermore Farm sits on the limestone land of the West of Ireland — famous for producing tough, durable horses with the bone and constitution to compete at the highest level. An 8-month drought-free grazing season creates an optimum environment for young horses to develop both physically and mentally in natural herd conditions.

We offer 45 acres of re-seeded fields, single stables and open barns, all purposefully designed for young horses to grow and flourish at their own pace — the way nature intended.

Under the care of Noel and the Heathermore team, we provide a complete, transparent service to breeders and buyers throughout Ireland and beyond, as part of the Mayo Roscommon Breeders Group.

Bred for the
Podium

At Heathermore we breed specifically for the demands of modern eventing and showjumping — selecting bloodlines that combine scope, careful footwork, bold cross-country temperament and the soundness to last a long career at the top of the sport.

Our foals are raised on the same limestone land that has produced athletes for generations. The natural mineral content of the West of Ireland ground gives young bones and joints the foundation they need to excel.

The Foundation

Heathermore Farm's roots go back to 1978, when Patrick Kilroy established the foundation mares that would shape everything that followed. Heathermore Ephony stands as the original foundation broodmare — the beginning of a bloodline that has produced international sport horses for over four decades.

Year by Year

01
The Foal Year

The foal is weaned from the mare at 7 to 8 months and housed in a group for company over the winter months. Come spring, they are turned out onto the lush limestone pasture of the West of Ireland. All lessons are short — no more than 15 minutes — focusing on one or two things at a time, with lots of praise and patience.

02
The Yearling Year

Close attention is paid to growth and condition — ensuring youngsters are neither too thin nor too fat. They receive a low starch, low sugar grain programme twice daily alongside plentiful grass and hay. A continuous worming programme is maintained throughout. New lessons are introduced as they are ready.

03
The 3-Year-Old

At three, most horses have completed the majority of their growing. Growth plates have closed and it is safe to introduce loose schooling over jumping lane grids. This year provides a first competitive outing at national young horse eventing and showjumping loose jumping competitions — a valuable foundation for the sporting career ahead.

The Team

Heathermore Farm is a family operation. Every horse in our care is looked after by people who are passionate about the sport and dedicated to getting the best out of every animal.

Trusted by Riders & Breeders

Heathermore Farm has made it possible to have our elite event youngsters contract reared in Ireland. There is careful and diligent rearing and handling of youngsters from 1 to 3 years old, taking care of hoof trimming, teeth, dosing, vaccinations and everything in between. A super contract facility that provides a safe environment during winter months, with access to grass during a long grazing season. The capability of producing the 3-year-old to assess suitability for the sport and preparing them for the next stage of their sporting career provides truly valuable insights for the owner.

With Heathermore Farm, our youngsters have been reared, trained and taken care of to an exceptional standard — ready to be produced for the showjumping sphere under saddle coming into their 4th year. Winning best mare at a 2022 HSI sponsored 3yo loose Performance Class was an extra bonus, where one of my reared mares was professionally handled and produced at Heathermore for the event. Professional videos and pictures were available to me after the event. Heathermore farms sustainably and enhances biodiversity, which is a similar mindset to our activities at Karlswood.

Farming with
Purpose

Sustainability and biodiversity are at the heart of everything we do at Heathermore. We believe that caring for the land is inseparable from caring for the horses that live on it.

  • Planted hedges and rested hedgerows to aid biodiversity
  • Soil sampling and analysis — minimising fertiliser inputs while maintaining nutrient requirements
  • Reduced stocking rates — equine methane emissions are 83% less than the bovine equivalent
  • Farming sustainably while enhancing biodiversity at the heart of everything we do
